Heating and cooling (HVAC) typically account for over 50% of an average U.S. home's annual energy consumption, making it the largest energy expense. In Commercial buildings HVAC can run as high as 58%. Simply by opening up a building to the South, 76% of direct solar heat gain can be collected. Compared with an average conversion rate of 18% to 23% by converting sunlight into electricity with solar panels. With long-distance loss through power lines, these losses can even be as high as 5-10%, sometimes affecting overall efficiency. With wind and solar only creating 17% of energy last year, it seems obvious we need more efficient methods.
